To many peoples' surprise, Charles Addams' (1912-1988) mother did not give birth to him in a dilapidated house along a deserted highway. Nor did he have a pet alligator that was a scourge to the neighborhood's poodles. In fact, he grew up in the almost generic suburban community of Westfield, New Jersey. He yearningly scribbled pictures of the more exciting realm of knights and their castles. He was known however, to sometimes wander in the local graveyard, and did play in a nearby Victorian house that would one day become the model for the Addams' family home. However, somewhat sadly to fans, the predilection for morbidity apparent in much of his work was not the result of childhood mishaps. After graduating from high school, Addams began studying at Colgate University in 1929. Dissatisfied, he transferred to the University of Pennsylvania after a year, resolutely deciding the life of the academic was not for him. Apparently though it was schooling that was not for him, as he dropped out of the Grand Central School of Art in New York City after only a year. In 1935, the New Yorker signed him on as a regular cartoonist. Living on the modest thirty-five dollars per cartoon the New Yorker paid, Addams developed a sophisticated style of humor. His macabre wit could make his audience laugh at the truly grotesque and sometimes appalling. Some of his most popular characters were even spun off into a popular television series - the "Addams Family". His books of collected cartoons were best sellers. Exhibitions of his work have been mounted at the Fogg Art Museum in Cambridge, MA, the Rhode Island School of Design, and the Museum of the City of New York. Having hosted a retrospective in 1994, the New York Public Library continues to show a small rotating group of his works. Addams has also been honored with the Yale Humor Award (1954) and a special award from the Mystery Writers of America. In his spare time he enjoyed collecting vintage automobiles and ironically, he died behind the wheel in 1988.

Beyoncé Knowles and her husband Jay-Z welcomed a baby girl into the world on Sunday 8 January 2011.

Kelly Rowland origiannly spilt the beans about the baby's gender, but it was Gwyneth Paltrow who tweeted to confirm that the baby's name was Blue Ivy Carter.

"Welcome to the world Blue! We love you already," tweeted Paltrow.

We like, but we'd much rather it was Ivy Blue Carter, and until Paltrow ended speculation rumour was that the baby's name was actually the latter. Thank goodness for the social networking site.

Model Lauren Scruggs Loses Hand in Plane Propeller Accident; Slowly Recovering

Lauren Scruggs, a model and LOLO magazine fashion blogger, is slowly recovering from a plane accident over the weekend in which she lost her hand and suffered severe injuries after she accidentally walked into a spinning propeller.

Scruggs, who has also worked in the wardrobe department onGossip Girl, was exiting a two-seater plane in McKinney, Texas, on Saturday after flying around Dallas to see Christmas lights when the accident occurred. The blades sliced the left side of her face and shoulder, and severed her left hand, which was later amputated following multiple reconstructive surgeries.

Her parents, Jeff and Cheryl Scruggs, said on Tuesday's Good Morning America that their daughter made "positive progress" on Monday and was able to speak.

"They took out her tube in the afternoon. She didn't speak right away," Jeff said. "I said, 'Lauren will you say 'hi' to Daddy?' And she goes, 'Hi.' Later she told one of Cheryl's sisters that she loves her. That was so encouraging to us. She's really uncomfortable as you can imagine."

The FAA is investigating the accident, but authorities are unsure at how it occurred. Jeff believes Scruggs, 23, went to thank the pilot when she got hit. 

Cheryl was at the private airport at the time of the accident, but did not witness it. "I was inside, and someone came in and told me she had gotten hit," she said. "I was there until the care flight got there. I was just able to hold her and ... that's the toughest part of it all, just seeing her laying there and waiting for the help. All I could do was tell her that I love her."

Scruggs' left eye is still "questionable," according to her father, and the family is "praying she'll regain her sight." "It's going to be a long recovery," he said.

Virginia Tech News : 2 dead, 2nd Virginia Tech Shooting | Two Dead At Virginia Tech After Crazed Gunman Opened Fire On Camp

after 32 people were killed in this same school in 2007 now two people - including a police officer - are dead after a crazed gunman went on a shooting rampage at Virginia Tech campus just after noon today.

The police officer stopped a car during a routine traffic stop in the Coliseum parking lot and was shot. The suspect then fled on foot towards Cage lot and gunned down the second victim.
Montgomery County Schools are now on lockdown, sparking fears the gunman may have left the campus.


The suspect was described as a white male wearing gray sweat pants, a gray hat with neon green brim, a maroon hoodie and backpack.

An alert told students and faculty to stay inside and lock doors after the shots were fired at a parking lot near the campus, where 33 people died in 2007 in the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.
