Model Lauren Scruggs Loses Hand in Plane Propeller Accident; Slowly Recovering

Lauren Scruggs, a model and LOLO magazine fashion blogger, is slowly recovering from a plane accident over the weekend in which she lost her hand and suffered severe injuries after she accidentally walked into a spinning propeller.

Scruggs, who has also worked in the wardrobe department onGossip Girl, was exiting a two-seater plane in McKinney, Texas, on Saturday after flying around Dallas to see Christmas lights when the accident occurred. The blades sliced the left side of her face and shoulder, and severed her left hand, which was later amputated following multiple reconstructive surgeries.

Her parents, Jeff and Cheryl Scruggs, said on Tuesday's Good Morning America that their daughter made "positive progress" on Monday and was able to speak.

"They took out her tube in the afternoon. She didn't speak right away," Jeff said. "I said, 'Lauren will you say 'hi' to Daddy?' And she goes, 'Hi.' Later she told one of Cheryl's sisters that she loves her. That was so encouraging to us. She's really uncomfortable as you can imagine."

The FAA is investigating the accident, but authorities are unsure at how it occurred. Jeff believes Scruggs, 23, went to thank the pilot when she got hit.

Cheryl was at the private airport at the time of the accident, but did not witness it. "I was inside, and someone came in and told me she had gotten hit," she said. "I was there until the care flight got there. I was just able to hold her and ... that's the toughest part of it all, just seeing her laying there and waiting for the help. All I could do was tell her that I love her."

Scruggs' left eye is still "questionable," according to her father, and the family is "praying she'll regain her sight." "It's going to be a long recovery," he said.

In 1929 Rivera married the artist Frida Kahlo (1907 – 1954). The couple travelled in the United States, where Rivera produced many works of art, between 1930 and 1933. In San Francisco he painted murals for the Stock Exchange Luncheon Club and the California School of Fine Arts.

Two years later he had an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. One of his most important works is the fresco in the Detroit Institute of Arts (1933), which depicts industrial life in the United States.

The old saying is that pride goeth before a fall. And there is some truth to that statement. There are two sides to pride — bad pride and good pride. If we are vain and arrogant, pride is a negative and should be cast out of our lives. But I believe there is a good side to pride. You need to have pride in yourself and what you do. A better word might be self-confidence, but I think pride works as well.

But Rivera is right to say that art that is not based in feeling and only in technique and skill will never be as powerful or as great as art that is inspired by emotion. When you deeply feel about what you are painting or writing, you will do a much better job. If you have no feeling for your subject, you are simply going through the motions. You are not connected to the subject so it doesn't matter what you paint. Technique is the only thing of importance to you.

Diego Rivera Artist : 125th Birthday of Diego Rivera Today

Diego Rivera
About the Artist
“An artist is above all a human being, profoundly human to the core. If the artist can’t feel everything that humanity feels, if the artist isn’t capable of loving until he forgets himself and sacrifices himself if necessary, if he won’t put down his magic brush and head the fight against the oppressor, then he isn’t a great artist.”
Considered the greatest Mexican painter of the twentieth century, Diego Rivera had a profound effect on the international art world. Among his many contributions, Rivera is credited with the reintroduction of fresco painting into modern art and architecture. His radical political views and tempestuous romance with the painter Frieda Kahlo were then, and remain today, a source of public intrigue. In a series of visits to America, from 1930 to 1940, Rivera brought his unique vision to public spaces and galleries, enlightening and inspiring artists and laymen alike.
Diego Rivera was born in Guanajuato, Mexico in 1886. He began to study painting at an early age and in 1907 moved to Europe. Spending most of the next fourteen years in Paris, Rivera encountered the works of such great masters as Cézanne, Gauguin, Renoir, and Matisse. Rivera was searching for a new form of painting, one that could express the complexities of his day and still reach a wide audience. It was not until he began to study the Renaissance frescoes of Italy that he found his medium. It was with a vision of the future of the fresco and with a strong belief in public art that Rivera returned to Mexico.
Frescoes are mural paintings done on fresh plaster. Using the fresco form in universities and other public buildings, Rivera was able to introduce his work into the everyday lives of the people. Rivera concerned himself primarily with the physical process of human development and the effects of technological progress. For him, the frescoes’ size and public accessibility was the perfect canvas on which to tackle the grand themes of the history and future of humanity. A life long Marxist, Rivera saw in this medium an antidote to the elite walls of galleries and museums. Throughout the twenties his fame grew with a number of large murals depicting scenes from Mexican history. His work appealed to the people’s interest in the history of technology and progress. The desire to understand progress was visible in the growing industrial societies of the 1930s, and Rivera saw the workers’ struggle as a symbol of the fragile political ground on which that capitalism trod.
